J Ward

Former gaol and criminal asylum now visited on guided heritage tours.

J Ward began as Ararat's bluestone gaol and later became a high-security psychiatric ward for people judged criminally insane. Today it is a guided-tour site, and the best visits treat it as difficult social history rather than just a spooky old building.

The cells, yards, institutional rooms, and stories of confinement make it one of the stronger heritage stops in western Victoria. It is not a cheerful attraction, but it gives Ararat a depth that many goldfields towns lack.
