The Shamrock Hotel is one of the grandest Victorian-era pub buildings in Australia, occupying a prominent corner position on Pall Mall in the heart of Bendigo. Built in the 1890s when gold money was still flowing freely, it has the elaborate rendered facade, ornate ironwork balconies, and imposing scale that characterised the most ambitious commercial buildings of the era.
The interior lives up to the exterior: high pressed-metal ceilings, a long bar, and a general sense of having been built to impress — and to endure. It has operated continuously as a hotel since its construction, which makes it a rare survivor; most comparable buildings around Australia were demolished or stripped during the twentieth century.
You can have a drink at the bar or stay here as a hotel guest. Even if you are not stopping, the building is worth pausing to look at from the street — it captures the ambition of a goldfields boomtown at the height of its wealth better than any heritage plaque could describe.
Address: Corner of Pall Mall and Williamson Street, Bendigo
