Loch Ard Gorge

Narrow gorge and beach tied to one of the Shipwreck Coast's best-known wrecks.

Loch Ard Gorge is more intimate than the Twelve Apostles and, in some ways, more memorable. Stairs drop to a small beach enclosed by cliffs, with surf pushing into the narrow opening and seabirds circling overhead.

The shipwreck history gives the place weight, but it is not just a memorial stop. Walk the surrounding lookouts if time allows; each angle shows how fast the limestone is being carved apart.

A story
The clipper Loch Ard wrecked nearby in 1878 after sailing from England. Only two of the 54 people aboard survived: apprentice Tom Pearce and passenger Eva Carmichael, whose story became one of the coast's defining legends.
