Pink Cliffs Reserve

Pastel clay gullies and mini cliffs left by nineteenth-century hydraulic gold sluicing.

Pink Cliffs Reserve is the reason Heathcote catches travelers by surprise. Gold miners washed away the surface here with high-pressure water in the late nineteenth century, leaving small gullies, soft pink clay, and iron-stained ridges that now form a short walking circuit.

It is an easy visit, best for photography and a quick lesson in how destructive, and visually strange, hydraulic sluicing could be. Stay behind the fences where posted; the clay is fragile.
