Maldon's centre is the reason the town belongs on a Goldfields trip. High Street, Main Street, and the lanes around them still carry the shape of a 19th-century mining town: timber verandahs, old pubs, civic buildings, stone gutters, painted signs, and small shopfronts that reward slow looking.
Do not rush it as a photo stop. The pleasure is in the coherence of the streetscape: there are no single blockbuster buildings, but almost every corner adds something to the town's gold rush atmosphere.
