Charcoal Lane

Address 136 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy

Charcoal Lane is one of the few restaurants in Melbourne building a serious menu around native Australian ingredients — wallaby, emu, saltbush, native pepper, wattleseed, and bush fruits — handled with care rather than gimmickry. The cooking is modern Australian with genuine Indigenous roots, and the result is both a good dinner and an education in a food culture most visitors never encounter.

It doubles as a training kitchen for young Aboriginal and at-risk people, so eating here directly supports that work. Service can have the earnest unevenness of a place where people are learning, which is part of the experience. Book ahead, particularly at weekends.

A story
Charcoal Lane is run as a social enterprise by Mission Australia, training young Aboriginal and disadvantaged people in hospitality. It occupies the former Aborigines Advancement League building on Gertrude Street — a street at the centre of Melbourne's Aboriginal community and its land-rights movement since the 1950s — which gives the restaurant a significance well beyond its menu.
