Eureka Tower rises 297 metres from the south bank of the Yarra and was the tallest residential building in the world when it was completed in 2006. The Skydeck observation platform on the 88th floor gives 360-degree views over Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay on a clear day — the view extends to the Dandenong Ranges to the east and the Mornington Peninsula to the south. Entry is charged and the views are worth it, particularly at dusk.
The "Edge" experience at the Skydeck involves sliding out in a glass cube that extends beyond the face of the building, leaving you suspended over the street below. It is unambiguously a tourist gimmick, but an effective one. The tower itself is a striking presence on the Southbank skyline, its gold crown visible from much of inner Melbourne.
