Princess Royal Fortress

Built between 1893 and 1896 on the slopes of Mount Adelaide, the Princess Royal Fortress was constructed to defend King George Sound after fears of a Russian naval attack during a period of imperial rivalry. The threat never materialised, but the fort remained in use through both world wars. Today the restored gun emplacements, barracks, and military buildings are open to explore, and the views across the sound from the battery positions are among the best in Albany. A small museum traces the fortress history and the wider story of Albany's strategic importance.
