King George Sound is one of the most reliable whale-watching sites in Australia. Southern Right Whales arrive to breed and calve in the sheltered waters from June through September, often coming so close to shore they can be watched from the beach at Middleton Bay. Humpbacks pass through from July to October on their annual migration. Several operators run tours from the town jetty — a boat trip gets you close to animals that can grow to 15 metres, and the sound's geography makes conditions calm even when the open coast is rough. No sighting is guaranteed, but the success rate through July and August is high.
