Dampier Archipelago

The Dampier Archipelago consists of 42 islands scattered off the Pilbara coast, many uninhabited and accessible only by boat. The islands are part of the same geological formation as the Burrup Peninsula and many carry rock art engravings; they are also significant breeding grounds for seabirds, sea turtles, and dugongs.

Charter boats operate from Dampier (adjacent to Karratha) for day trips and multi-day fishing excursions through the archipelago. The combination of excellent fishing, clear water, and empty beaches makes it a draw for serious recreational fishers from across Western Australia. Snorkelling around the island reefs is rewarding in calm conditions. The more remote islands require a permit from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions; the accessible outer islands can be visited freely. Humpback whales pass through the archipelago on their winter migration (June to October).
