Lake Ballard is Menzies' great outback detour: a wide salt lake where 51 black steel figures stand scattered across the white crust. The installation, Inside Australia, was made by Antony Gormley for the 2003 Perth International Arts Festival using body scans of Menzies residents, shrunk and cast into spare, elongated forms.
The lake is about 51 km from town on an unsealed but usually straightforward road. Early morning and late afternoon are much better than midday, both for the light and for the heat. Climb the small hill by the car park before walking out onto the lake; from above, the figures make more sense as a field of people spread across the salt.
