Menzies Town Hall

Handsome gold-rush civic building whose clock tower waited almost a century for its clock.

Menzies Town Hall is the strongest building on Shenton Street and a useful anchor for a walk around town. It began as modest council offices in 1896, then grew into a stone-fronted civic building with a clock tower when gold money was still flowing.

The tower is the odd detail. A clock was ordered from London in 1904, but the ship carrying it ran aground off Fremantle and the clock face was lost. The tower stayed empty until new clock faces were finally installed in 1999.
