Tetautua Village

Tetautua is the second and smaller settlement on Penrhyn, located on the eastern rim of the atoll across the lagoon from Omoka. The village has a small church and a handful of houses; the population is perhaps 50 or 60 people. Getting there from Omoka requires arranging a boat trip — there is no road connecting the two settlements.

Visiting Tetautua is worth considering for those with more than a day or two on the island. The eastern rim of the atoll has its own character, with slightly different vegetation and a view of the lagoon that differs from the western shore. Arrange the trip in advance through your accommodation in Omoka.

A story
Tetautua is smaller than Omoka and more isolated — the two villages are on opposite sides of the atoll, and travelling between them requires a boat crossing of several kilometres across the lagoon. The separation means that Tetautua has developed a slightly distinct character from the main village. It is the kind of place where arriving uninvited and unannounced would be unusual enough to be remarkable.
