Cocos Island

Cocos Island sits just off the southern tip of Guam, visible from the Merizo waterfront and accessible by a short boat ride from the village pier. The island has a good sand beach facing the open Pacific and the reef surrounding the lagoon offers some of the best snorkelling in southern Guam — clear water, coral in reasonable condition, and a variety of reef fish.

The island is the main reason most visitors make the trip to Merizo. Day-trip boat services run from the pier; some operators include snorkelling equipment. The lagoon between the island and the mainland is calm and shallow, suitable for swimming and kayaking. There is a simple beach bar and facilities on the island. It is much quieter than the resort beaches in Tumon Bay in the north.

A story
Cocos Island is separated from the Guam mainland by a shallow lagoon, and for most of Guam's history this made it a useful place to isolate people. During the Spanish colonial period, lepers were exiled here. During the Japanese occupation in WWII, Filipino civilians were imprisoned on the island.
