Guam

Western Pacific island territory where Chamorro culture, American suburbia, Japanese tourism, and reef beaches meet.

Guam is the largest island in Micronesia and, in many ways, the odd one out — an American territory in the western Pacific, closer to Manila than to Honolulu, with an indigenous Chamorro culture that predates both. It draws visitors primarily from Japan and South Korea, who come for the beaches, the diving, and the duty-free shopping. The result is a place that feels simultaneously American, Japanese, and Pacific Islander, with a distinct Chamorro identity running underneath all of it.

The island is small — about 30 miles long and 9 miles wide — but it packs in a surprising range: pristine beaches and reef along the western coast, jungle-covered hills and historic villages in the south, and a sprawling tourist corridor around Tumon Bay in the north-west that could be transplanted from anywhere. Beyond the Tumon strip, Guam is more interesting. The capital, Hagatna (also still known by its older name, Agana), has Spanish-era ruins, a good market, and a genuine local character.

The island's history is layered and complicated. The Chamorro people have lived here for at least 3,500 years. Spain colonized Guam in 1668 and held it for 230 years. The US took it in 1898. Japan occupied it from 1941 to 1944. The war left physical and cultural scars that are still being processed — several sites in Guam are part of the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, and Liberation Day on July 21 is the island's most important holiday. The US military still occupies around 27% of the island's land area, which shapes politics and daily life in ways that visitors notice quickly.

For travelers, Guam is most rewarding if you get out of Tumon. The southern half of the island has the most character: Umatac, where Magellan made his first Pacific landfall; the waterfalls at Talofofo; the ancient Chamorro latte stones; and the ferry to Cocos Island for a day of snorkeling in quiet waters.
