The Maneaba ni Maungatabu — literally "the meeting house of the sacred mountain" — is the national parliament of Kiribati, located on Ambo islet in South Tarawa. It was deliberately built in the shape of a traditional Kiribati maneaba, the open-sided community meeting house with a steeply pitched thatched roof that is still the centre of village life across the country. The architecture is a quiet political statement: democratic decision-making rooted in pre-colonial Gilbertese tradition.
You can usually look around the grounds even when parliament is not sitting. If you arrange ahead, public sessions can sometimes be observed from the visitor gallery, though business is conducted largely in Gilbertese.
