Sacred Heart Cathedral

Catholic cathedral and seat of the Diocese of Tarawa and Nauru

The Sacred Heart Cathedral in Teaoraereke is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tarawa and Nauru and one of the largest church buildings on the atoll. The Catholic Church is the single largest denomination in Kiribati, and Sunday mass here is a good window onto the country's intensely religious culture — strong choral singing in Gilbertese, packed pews, and a congregation that takes its faith very seriously.

The building itself is straightforward modern concrete rather than architecturally extraordinary, but the white facade against the lagoon-side sky is striking, and visitors are welcome to look in outside service times. If you happen to be on Tarawa for a major feast day, the procession and music are worth catching.
