Arno Atoll

Accessible Marshall Islands atoll near Majuro, with many islets, a broad lagoon, and stick-chart traditions.

Arno is the closest atoll to Majuro, lying just a short boat ride to the southeast, and it is one of the most accessible outer islands in the country. The atoll has over 130 islets enclosing a large, shallow lagoon with clear water and healthy coral.

Day trips from Majuro are straightforward — boat hire through guesthouses is the usual arrangement. Staying overnight on Arno gives a much more genuine experience: the villages are quiet, fishing is the main activity, and the pace of life is entirely different from the capital. There are a handful of simple guesthouses; expect basic accommodation.

Arno is known for its traditional stick-chart makers and is one of the few outer atolls where this craft is still practiced. The lagoon is excellent for snorkeling and kayaking.
