Cathedral of the Assumption

The Cathedral of the Assumption is the main Catholic church in Majuro and the most prominent religious building on the atoll. Its white facade stands out against the low skyline of D-U-D, and the interior is cooler and quieter than the humid roads outside. Catholic missionaries arrived in the Marshall Islands in the late nineteenth century during the German colonial period, and the church's presence is a reminder of that layered colonial history.

The cathedral serves a significant local congregation and sees steady activity throughout the week. Even for non-worshippers it is worth a brief visit for the architecture and to get a sense of how Christian faith is woven into everyday life in the Marshalls, where traditional culture and introduced religion have coexisted for well over a century.
