Marshall Islands War Memorial Park

The Marshall Islands War Memorial Park is a beachfront park in Delap, overlooking the lagoon near the site of the old American naval base. A series of memorials and rusting wartime relics pay tribute to both the Marshallese civilians caught up in the fighting and the American and Japanese forces who contested these islands in 1944.

The park is a quiet place to stand and take stock of what this flat strip of coral experienced during the Second World War. The lagoon view is calming, and the memorial plaques provide an orientation to the specific history of Majuro in a way that general Pacific War histories rarely do. A good stop before or after visiting the Alele Museum, which has more context on the colonial and wartime eras.

A story
Majuro Atoll served as a major US Navy advance base after American forces captured the Marshall Islands in early 1944. At its peak the base handled more ships than any other anchorage in the Pacific. The memorial park stands near where the supply docks once crowded the lagoon shore.
