The calm, protected waters of the inner lagoon make Chuuk an excellent destination for sea kayaking. The distances between the inner high islands — Weno, Dublon (Tonoas), Fefan, Uman, and others — are manageable in a day, and the route passes over the clearest water in the Pacific. You can look straight down through 10–15 metres of water and see the reef below.
Most trips visit outer islands where traditional life continues largely unchanged. Women weave on backstrap looms, fishing canoes go out before dawn, and children play in the surf without apparent awareness of the outside world. Boat makers on some of the inner islands still construct traditional outrigger canoes from local timber. With permission and a local guide, visitors can watch the process from rough timber to finished vessel. This is one part of Chuuk that has nothing to do with WWII — and it is just as compelling.
