Kosrae State Museum

The Kosrae State Museum in Tofol is a small but worthwhile introduction to the island's history and culture, covering the pre-contact Leluh civilization, the impact of 19th-century missionary activity (which transformed Kosraean society rapidly and thoroughly), WWII on Kosrae, and contemporary village life. The collection includes traditional canoe-building tools, navigation instruments, household objects, and a good selection of maps charting European contact.

The museum is the logical first stop before visiting the Leluh ruins — the context it provides makes the archaeological site considerably more comprehensible. Staff are knowledgeable and willing to talk at length about Kosraean history to visitors who show interest. Hours are limited and can be irregular; confirm timing before making a special trip. The museum also serves as an informal information point for the island and can help arrange guide contacts for hiking and cultural visits.
