Getting Around

Colonia is the only real town on Yap, and it is small enough to walk across in twenty minutes. Most of the hotels, restaurants, and dive operators are concentrated here or on the waterfront immediately nearby. For exploring the villages and stone money banks scattered across the main island, you will need transport — either a taxi, a hire car, or a guide. Taxis are available in Colonia and are the easiest option for short trips; agree on a price before you get in. Car hire exists but the options are limited and vehicles are not always in good condition. Ask at your hotel or dive operator, who will usually know what is currently available.

Most visitors come to Yap primarily to dive, and the dive operators handle the logistics of reaching the offshore sites. Manta Ray Bay Resort and Yap Divers run regular boat trips to Mi'l Channel and the other dive sites, and if you are staying at a dive-focused property your boat transport is likely included or easily arranged. For trips to the outer islands and atolls of Yap State — Ulithi, Woleai, and the others — you will need to make arrangements well in advance, as inter-island transport is irregular. The main island itself has a road circuit, and the drive around it in a day is an excellent way to see the stone money banks, visit village platforms, and get a sense of the island's geography.
