The bay itself is the setting that makes everything else worthwhile — calm, turquoise water sheltered behind the lagoon's outer reef, dotted with small limestone islets and edged with dark beaches of volcanic sand. Snorkelling from the bay is rewarding even close to shore; outside the lagoon, the reef drop-off has been described by visiting French divers as among the best in the Pacific.
Local operators run boat trips into the bay, to the offshore islets, and out across the lagoon to the reef. Kayaking is also possible and offers the closest views of the limestone formations from the water.
