The island's most celebrated attraction, on the northeast coast at Oro Bay. A section of the outer reef creates a large, sheltered pool of brilliant turquoise water teeming with small colourful fish. The snorkelling is outstanding: visibility is exceptional, the fish are plentiful, and the setting — surrounded by araucaria pines and white sand — is hard to beat.
Getting here is part of the experience. The most popular approach is the traditional pirogue trip across Upi Bay (see below), followed by a 40-minute trail through pine forest and tidal shallows to reach the pool. You can also reach it by car on the island's east road, followed by a 20-minute walk. An entrance fee of XPF 2,000 applies.
