Notre Dame de Lourdes Chapel

Headland chapel with sweeping views over Santal Bay

A small Catholic chapel perched on a headland above Santal Bay, reached by a short walk from Easo beach. The chapel itself is modest, but the location is exceptional — a 180-degree view over the bay and out toward the open Pacific. It's a five-minute walk from the beach and worth combining with a swim.

Pair it with a snorkel at Jinek Bay just below — the path links the two without needing the car.

A story
Built in 1898 by Marist missionaries on a limestone outcrop above Easo, the chapel marks the spot where French Catholic missionaries first established themselves on Lifou — a high, breezy headland that doubles as the best viewpoint on the west coast. Inside it is whitewashed and almost bare; outside, the entire arc of Santal Bay opens up at your feet. Locals still use it for occasional services, so close the door behind you when you leave.
