Wé is Lifou's administrative centre — and by island standards, its only real town. It's where the airstrip lands, where the supply boats come in, and where you'll find the bank, the supermarket, the post office, and most of the rentable accommodation. None of that adds up to a destination in its own right, but you'll pass through repeatedly.
The waterfront has a long sweep of bay used as the harbour for the ferry from Nouméa, and there's a market on certain mornings selling vegetables, fish, and the island's vanilla. If you've come from mainland New Caledonia expecting a Pacific town, the scale of Wé — a few streets, no traffic lights — gives you the first real measure of how rural Lifou is.
