Plage de Tiéti

Tiéti is the long stretch of pale sand a few kilometres north of Poindimié town, fronting the lagoon at the only proper resort on this coast — the Tiéti Hotel. The beach is open to anyone, and even without staying you can walk the sand or borrow a kayak from the hotel's beach club for the morning.

The water is clear and shallow over the inner lagoon, with a coral garden a short swim out from the beach. The reef pass beyond, accessible by boat, is one of the better dive sites on Grande Terre's east coast; visibility is reliably good outside cyclone season and there are usually a few reef sharks around. Late afternoon, when the wind drops and the lagoon flattens, is the time to be in the water.

A story
The reef just offshore from Tiéti is a regular stop for the Nouméa-based dive operator Nautile, which moors up over the pass to find black-tip reef sharks and the occasional eagle ray patrolling the drop-off.
