Tchamba River and Valley

The Tchamba flows down from the central range to meet the lagoon south of Poindimié, cutting through a deep valley of rainforest and Kanak tribal land. The unpaved track that follows the river inland is one of the best short detours on the east coast — the road quickly leaves the lagoon behind and climbs into dense subtropical forest, passing scattered tribal villages along the way.

There are several swimming holes along the river where the water gathers in deep pools beneath small waterfalls; the locals will point you to the best ones if you ask. The valley is on customary land, so a small courtesy gift of cloth or money (the coutume) when meeting the chief or elders is appropriate before swimming or picnicking.
