Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs

DeBretts is a hot springs resort on the eastern edge of Taupo, drawing water from the same geothermal system that powers the Craters of the Moon. The complex includes a range of pools at different temperatures — from a cool 36°C up to a skin-prickling 44°C — plus a waterslide for families and a quieter section for those who want to soak rather than play.

The outdoor pools have good views over the surrounding landscape. DeBretts is a popular spot for campervan travellers and is considerably less crowded than Rotorua's commercial hot spring complexes. Entry is by the hour and includes access to all pools. Bring a towel.

A story
The DeBretts springs were first developed for bathing in the 1890s, when the hot mineral water was believed to have medicinal properties that could cure rheumatism and skin conditions. The resort's original bathhouse was a grand Victorian affair; the modern pools are considerably less formal but the water temperature and mineral content remain what they have always been.
