Awatotara Conservation Covenant

Bush reserve where you can hear and sometimes see endemic Chatham forest birds

Awatotara is a privately owned bush block on the western side of Chatham Island, set aside under a conservation covenant to protect surviving fragments of native forest and the birds that depend on them. Access is by arrangement with the landowners and is best done with a local guide who knows the area and the etiquette around the nesting sites.

This is one of the better places to hear (and with luck see) Chatham Island warblers, parea (the endemic pigeon), and the occasional Chatham snipe. The walk through the bush is short but the experience of standing in old kopi forest with the rain in the canopy is one of the things you came to the Chathams for.
