Opal Hot Springs

Opal Hot Springs is a small thermal complex about ten minutes east of Matamata, set in a quiet spot near the Waihou River. The water comes out of the ground at a useful temperature without too much sulphur smell, and the pools are simple, modestly priced and rarely crowded — quite different from the better-known thermal towns of Rotorua and Taupo.

There are several public pools at different temperatures, a few private spa rooms, and a small campground. Open year-round; best on a cool day when the contrast with the air temperature makes the soak worthwhile.
