Muriwai Beach

Long black-sand surf beach on Auckland's west coast, exposed to the Tasman Sea.

Muriwai Beach is a long sweep of black iron sand with surf, wind, and a horizon that feels much bigger than Auckland should allow. It is good for walking, watching surfers, and taking in the west-coast mood; swimming should stay between the flags when lifeguards are on duty.

At low tide the beach opens into a broad, hard strip of sand. The scale is part of the appeal, but so is the caution: rips, sudden waves, and changing access rules make this a place to read the conditions before treating it casually.
