Ōtakamiro Point is the headline sight at Muriwai. In breeding season, gannets pack the cliffs and nearby Motutara Island, close enough from the viewing areas that you can watch the constant traffic of birds arriving from the Tasman Sea.
The best months are usually late winter through summer, with chicks visible later in the season. The track has had storm-related closures and repairs in recent years, so check current Auckland Council notices before making the drive.
