Mataatua Wharenui

Mataatua Wharenui is the carved Ngati Awa meeting house known as "the house that came home." Built in the 1870s, it spent more than a century away from Whakatane before returning to Te Manuka Tutahi Marae.

For travellers, it is the clearest cultural reason to stop in town. The carving, story, and sense of return give Whakatane a depth that beach towns often lack.
