Moutohora, also called Whale Island, is a protected volcanic island off Whakatane. Access is restricted, so visits happen only with approved guides, which keeps the focus on birds, plants, conservation work, and the odd feeling of being close to town but in a tightly guarded sanctuary.
It is the strongest natural anchor for Whakatane. Plan around weather and tour availability rather than assuming you can simply turn up at the harbour.
