The rivers around Wairoa — particularly the Ruakituri and Hangaroa — have a reputation as some of the finest trout fishing in New Zealand, which is saying something in a country that takes its trout fishing extremely seriously. The Ruakituri Valley in particular attracts serious fly fishers from around the world, drawn by clear water, wild backcountry, and brown and rainbow trout that run large.
The rivers are predominantly fly fishing only, and access to some of the best reaches requires hiring a local guide who knows the beats and the seasonal conditions. Most visitors base themselves in Wairoa and drive into the valley each day. The season runs from October through April, with spring and autumn generally producing the best conditions. Check with Fish & Game New Zealand and local guides for current conditions and access arrangements.
