Sea Kayaking

Guided and self-guided kayaking through the bay's islands and coves

The Bay of Islands is excellent kayaking territory: sheltered water, numerous islands to explore, and wildlife (penguins, stingrays, and the occasional dolphin) encountered at close range. Several operators in Paihia offer guided half-day and full-day trips, as well as kayak hire for experienced paddlers who want to explore independently.

A popular self-guided route paddles south from Paihia to the Waitangi mangroves and back, or across to some of the closer islands. Guided tours typically head to less-visited corners of the bay that tour boats can't access, landing on small beaches and snorkelling off rocks. The Bay is well-sheltered and kayaking is possible for much of the year; wind and swell occasionally limit trips in winter.
