Turuturu-Mokai Pa is one of the historic Maori pa sites around Hawera, a reminder that South Taranaki's story did not begin with dairy farming, roads, or the water tower. The earthworks are modest to the eye, but the site carries real local weight.
It is best visited with a little reading beforehand. Without context it can look like a quiet reserve; with context it helps connect Hawera to the older fortified landscapes and later conflict history of Taranaki.
