Great Taste Trail

The Great Taste Trail is a 174 km cycle trail that loops through the Tasman District, passing through Richmond and connecting Nelson, Mapua, Motueka, Kaiteriteri, and the Rabbit Island ferry crossing. It is one of New Zealand's Great Rides, meaning it is graded suitable for most reasonably fit riders — the terrain is mostly flat or gently rolling, following old railway corridors and coastal paths.

From Richmond, the most popular section runs northwest to the Waimea Estuary, then along the coast toward Mapua and its vibrant waterfront. The full loop takes four to five days; many people ride the Richmond to Mapua section as a day ride and take the ferry to avoid backtracking. E-bike hire is available in Richmond if the hills feel like too much.

A story
The trail gets its name from the Tasman region's food and wine reputation — you pass vineyards, orchards, and food producers throughout the route. Several cellar doors along the way welcome cyclists, and the trail is designed so you can stop for lunch at a winery and continue without needing to be particularly serious about your cycling.
