Lake Grassmere, also known as Kapara Te Hau, is a shallow coastal lake turned into a broad field of salt ponds. On a clear day the pans can shift between pale blue, pink, and chalky white, with stacks of harvested salt beside the highway.
It is still a working industrial site, so you mostly see it from public roads and nearby viewpoints rather than wandering through the ponds. Even so, the scale and colour make it one of the strangest landscapes on this stretch of coast.
