Totara Estate is a restored 19th-century farm estate south of Oamaru, managed as a heritage site. Its claim to fame is New Zealand's first shipment of frozen meat, exported from here in 1882 and central to the country's later farming economy.
The limestone farm buildings are the main draw. Visit if you are interested in rural history, early refrigeration, or the agricultural story behind much of New Zealand's modern economy.
