Te Anau Bird Sanctuary is a small lakeside conservation stop where visitors can see native birds, including takahe, close to town. It adds an easy wildlife angle to a place better known as the gateway to Fiordland's long drives and big tracks.
The sanctuary is best as a gentle hour rather than a major expedition: walk from town, read the conservation signs, and use it to learn the birds you may later hear or glimpse in the national park. Donations and respectful viewing help keep the focus on protection rather than display.
