This small public gallery is Gore's cultural surprise. It occupies a former Carnegie library and holds the Ralph Hotere Gallery, with works by one of New Zealand's major modern artists, and the John Money Wing, a wide-ranging collection that jumps from New Zealand art to Aboriginal Australian and West African work.
It is not a big-city museum, but it is serious, free, and well worth the stop if you are crossing Southland. Pair it with the Hokonui museum next door.
