Carter's Beach, four kilometres north of Westport, is a long arc of grey sand backed by dunes and native bush, facing the full force of the Tasman Sea. The beach has the wild, unspoiled character typical of the West Coast: no development, strong surf, and the kind of emptiness that makes it easy to feel alone in the landscape. Swimming requires caution — the rips and surf here are serious, and the water is cold year-round.
The beach is backed by the Westport airport and the Orowaiti River estuary, both of which add birdlife. The estuary at low tide attracts waders and waterfowl; the dunes behind the beach shelter small populations of variable oystercatchers. A good spot for a long walk or a dramatic sunset.
