The Awarua/Haast Visitor Centre is the practical starting point for the area. It is run by the Department of Conservation and gives current advice on short walks, weather, roads, wildlife, hut tickets, and hunting permits.
Do not treat it as just an information desk. The displays help explain why this wet, quiet corner of the coast matters ecologically, and they are useful before heading into the forest or over the pass.
