The western end of the Heaphy Track reaches the Tasman Sea north of Karamea, where nīkau palms, surf, and forest make a very different finish from the tussock and mountain sections inland. Many walkers end the Great Walk here, but you do not need to do the full route to enjoy the coast.
For a shorter visit, drive to Kohaihai and walk a section along the coast. It gives a strong taste of the track without committing to a multi-day crossing.
