Butler Point is the cultural anchor of the bay. The museum covers Mangonui's links with the global whaling trade, with a restored whaleboat, tryworks, harpoons, whalebone, and other gear that makes the industry feel physical rather than abstract.
The setting is part of the appeal: an 1840s house, mature gardens, old pohutukawa, and views back toward the harbour. Visits are by guided tour and appointment, so plan ahead rather than just turning up.
