Kolovai Beach

Long quiet stretch of sand and shallow reef on the western coast

The beach itself — a long sweep of cream-coloured sand on the western coast of Tongatapu, fronting a wide reef flat that drops to deeper water a couple of hundred metres out. Swimming is calm and shallow inside the reef; snorkelling improves toward the edge, with patches of coral and reef fish.

The beach is rarely busy, even on weekends, and there are no facilities of any kind. Bring water, food, sunscreen, and a snorkel. Sunsets are unobstructed across open ocean. Best at low tide for tide-pool exploring; full tide for swimming.
