A large white wooden barn of a church on Vaha'akolo Road, the Centenary Chapel is the headquarters of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, the country's largest denomination. It is enormous from the outside and even larger inside, with a simple wooden ceiling and almost no decoration beyond the painted royal coat of arms above the chancel.
Sunday morning service (10am) is when to come. The singing is famous — unaccompanied, in four-part harmony — and when the king and queen attend, the courtiers and Tongan nobles sit in formal dress in reserved pews near the front. Modest dress (tupenu for men, taovala wraps for both) is appreciated.
